Should marijuana be legalized? What would happen if the government made it legal? **Don't post incriminating comments (duh); they will be used against you.**
For some background: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legal_history_of_cannabis_in_the_United_States
Even Though im not a smoker i personally think that they should because who ever sells it would make alot of money..Teens From the ages of 15-19 are involved with marijuana. What would change is that everyone would be smoking. The reason why i dont smoke is because marijuana or how black people say "weed" kills your brain cells and makes you forget alot of things and makes you lose memory..I also think that young teens shouldnt be involved with marijuana because you cant trust people with it because they can put somethings inside of it that would make you lose your mind, and go crazy and will change you for life.I know people that happen too its not good. But the selling ratings on marijuana would shoot up and make alot of money beings that everybody smokes marijuana mostly teens. But who influences these teens to smoke or is it that they just wanna follow other people just to fit in and be like everyone else.Just because its good for them doesnt mean its good for you.Get advice from an adult about doing something you have no buisness doing,Like smoking dont try it unless you know what you getting yourself into.Well i still personally think that they should legalize it...
ReplyDeleteMarijuana is “a strong-smelling plant from whose dried leaves a number of euphoria and hallucinogenic drugs are prepared”. Marijuana also knows as cannabis is debated whether of not cannabis should be legal. It’s good that cannabis can be legal for medical purposes. This can help many lives of people that have diseases and illness that can be cured with cannabis. However I think cannabis should be legal only for the medical field or people that need cannabis to curse their illness. On the other hand, for non medical purposes should be illegal.
ReplyDeleteIf the government made it legal, I think many people will abuse this power and use cannabis for their own purposes that are non medical. This can cause many problems in the United States because cannabis is legal. This can cause many crimes in inner neighborhood such as Brownsville, Bed-Stuy, etc which already have a high crime rate today.
On the other hand, if the government made it legal, it can help many patients who have illness and disease can get the help they need to curse that illness. There are a large number of studies that show ongoing marijuana use can increase the risk of a number of ongoing mental health issues including paranoia, schizophrenia, delusions and depression. Many people can die if they do not get the help they need because marijuana is illegal. It should only be legal for patients in the hospitals and not for people who don’t need it. Because of this, it abuses the power of making marijuana legal. This is why this topic is debatable because on one person mind marijuana can help people lives however, other people mind marijuana shouldn’t be legal because it a drug and people can use drugs for the wrong reasons. Marijuana on the negative effect based on studies and research that it causes short term memory on the brain.
In conclusion, in the end, it is based on the government opinion in the decision whether or not marijuana should be legal. This can help people lives however; can also destroy other people lives. It all comes down to the person choice.
Personally I do not believe that Marijuana should be legalized. The reson why is because by making it legal it would give the youth the thought that its ok to do.
ReplyDeleteSmoking is considered to be a bad habit that many have, and a majority of people are smoking marijuana, and it does not benefit them in any way. However it does destroy people. Marijuana has been said to cause psychological episodes. People who use marijuana may become paranoid, and feel anxiety but these effects are Temporary. Also some people tend to begin to Crave smoking marijuana, they become somewhat addicted to it. & just like any other addiction it cannot benefit anyone. Although It is considered to be a plant it is also however a drug is what we need to keep in mind and drugs should remain ILLEGAL. It may ot be able to kill anyone but its still just as bad.
In conclusion Marijuana should not be made legal. & if the government was to make it legal nothing would really change except people would smoke outside openly.

ReplyDeleteFirst of all, I am sick and tired of hearing about how horrible marijuana is. Wake up people! Marijuana is an amazing plant. Besides the fact that it can be used for medical purposes, marijuana is also less harmful and less addictive than other legal drugs such as alcohol and cigarette. Marijuana has off course cause negative effects on society, but it is no where close to the number of negative effects alcohol and cigarette have introduce to world over the past years. Marijuana should be decriminalized and legal for the same reasons why alcohol and cigarette are legal. If marijuana was legal there would be less danger, corruption, and hatred in the world.
First and foremost, if marijuana was legal there would be a massive reduction of money flowing from the American economy to international criminal gangs. Marijuana’s illegality makes foreign cultivation and smuggling to the United States extremely profitable. Not only does this takes away money from America’s legal businesses but it also increases crimes and drug wars with drug cartels and police officers.
The positive attributes of marijuana such as its medical value and its recreational assistance has cause people to live a more prosperous and enjoyable life. Marijuana is beneficial to simulate appetites, relieve chronic pain, and treat asthma and migraines. With these medical contributions, people can live a longer and more fulfilling life thanks to the effect of marijuana. Sometimes when people need to relax after a hard day of work marijuana can be main source of remedy. That is because marijuana has the capability to alleviate stress, ease the body, and calm the mind.
Marijuana advocates are determine to stand up against the injustice of marijuana prohibition and are willing to accomplish legalization no matter how long it takes. To prove their consistent courage, marijuana advocates are often willing to take the risk of arrests and punishments to achieve a life long goal. Prohibition has failed to silence marijuana advocates for a very long time and it is not about to happen any time soon. As long as there is marijuana on Earth, advocates of marijuana legalization will continue to fight until they attain success.
Marijuana is a widely over used drug and would reap benefits to America by making it legalized. The truth is, that is true. You see Marijuana is a easy drug to produce and can be grown and rapid rates and in no time at all. So that would end up over produced and less bought if it could be home grown. I think it should be legalized but to some extent. Like how Obama legalized Marijuana for medical purposes only. The reason it was legalized medically is because marijuana is a natural sedative and can be used to calm down or release pain. Marijuana should be legalized but with rules, like kids under the age of 18 being able to obtain and smoke it. The reason is because the drug will become over used and will result in less education it the school system, and we don't need Americas educational status to go any lower than it already is. Marijuana would be good if legalized in colleges, it would allow students to release pent up stress. The reason I would want marijuana legalized for college students than high school students is because of the reason of use. You see most high school students would use the drug to get "High" while most college students would otherwise use the drug to become less stressed therefore allow them to become more focused on school work and more likely to attain what ever school goals they set for themselves. The drug marijuana isn't a harmful substance and there are traces of people smoking Marijuana as far back as 3,000 B.C. You see Marijuana should be a controlled substance and if it were to be allowed to the mass public its sale should be guarded and permits should be needed to sell the drug. To me this would be the most logical advise i would give to allow marijuana to be legalized. So all in all Marijuana should be legalized if the RIGHT precautions are taken.
ReplyDeleteMarvin Clarke,
ReplyDeleteI feel like marijuana should not be legalized because people use the drug for all the wrong reason. Marijuana should only be used for curing diseases and other illnesses but other people who use it too much can affect the function of their brain, like they could have brain cell loss, loss of memory and they could also start to suffer some mental illness because of the overdose on the drug. I know that I will stay way from the drug because I already know that marijuana has a negative affect on my health, even if I can use the drug if the doctor allows me to use it I’m still not going to use it because people could slip something in the drug that I get from the doctor and I could affect my life long time and I would not have no way of changing the way I turn out. If the government legalized marijuana I think people who are not using the drug for medical reason is going to damage their body and they would only have themselves to blame. If the government legalized the drug it is just going to smoke the same way they did when it was illegal so I don’t think it’s going make a difference, the only difference is that the people who uses marijuana for medical reason will be cured from their certain illness or diseases. Do you want to live in a world with mental ill people that basically cause themselves to become that way or do you want to live in a world with people who are able to make the right decision in their life that will save them and make them have a health life. People should really think about this because the world would be a better place but if people want to smoke the weed, let them because at the end it is their own body they are affecting not yours and its people decision to smoke the weed so just do what ever you got to do to make the educated decision that will make a difference in your life and other life because you do not have to smoke to feel the same as a person who does, its something called second hand smoke.
I think marijuana should be legalized. Marijuana can be good but also have bad side effects like other drugs. If marijuana was legalized the crime rates would go down because there would be less drug arrest. Either way people find a way to buy it. It would save the time of the police and a lot of the tax payer’s money that are being use to put these people in jail. So not only would it be better on prisons but economies. Another way it could better the economy is by opening more job and school opportunities. If you get caught doing marijuana and it goes on your record colleges and jobs would look down on you when you try to apply for an opening. If marijuana is legalized they couldn’t do that because that would be discrimination. Also one more way it can help American economies is by beginning an opening of marijuana businesses. If this business was established it has a chance to become bigger then tobacco companies. People say marijuana can kill your brain cells but it can also save them. If a person take in alcohol that alcohol releases a hormone that kills brain cell but if they smoke marijuana it release a hormone that stops the hormone in alcohol thus saving brain cells. People say that marijuana can be abused but so can every thing else. Some one could go to a pharmacy get Tylenol and over dose the part that turns people off about this drug it that you have to smoke it. If people decide to smoke marijuana why not let them people are allowed to smoke cigarettes. People with catarax and arthritis use marijuana for healing purposes. Marijuana can also be used to help people with pains, inflammation, and cramps. A doctor can’t just prescribe this for every body but if marijuana was legalized people can take them when they have these pains like they do with other medications. People with catarax and arthritis use marijuana for healing purposes. Marijuana is viewed as bad but every thing has a negative effective effect from soda to tap water not just marijuana.
ReplyDeleteMarijuana should be legalized because it could have several medicinal benefits which would overshadow by the negatives effects that could come along with this. Marijuana can be used to treat glaucoma, epilepsy and seizures, cancer and many other diseases. These diseases will not be cured through the use of marijuana but they could be relieved and or combat some of the frequent symptoms. For example using marijuana could relieve some of the severe nerve pressure put on the eyes for individuals suffering with glaucoma. Marijuana is currently contraband in all American states except California but there are still many people in other parts of the country using this drug. If this drug became legalized this would cause individuals who are already using the substance illegally to abuse it more which is one of the negative effects. It would also be used for more than medicinal purposes but those who over use it could not get punished for this because it would be legal to do so. Legalizing this drug would have a few additional positives like reducing the sale of illegal drugs because there would be less drug dealers selling weed because anybody who of age who would like to purchase this could do so. If this drug should be legalized it should be used under the same provisions as alcohol. Alcohol and marijuana share a lot of the same properties so there should be a similar method to regulating their uses. Both of these substances give the people who use them a temporary feeling of relaxation and comfort that they enjoy but if too much is taken in the user may not be able to control their activities. There should be an age limit for those who can purchase this, and there should be a limit of consumption for which heavy machinery can be operated such as cars and others. If marijuana is legalized under these conditions and others its legalization would not really stir up the nation negatively but it could have several positive impacts on the country. Labeling this drug illegal has increased criminal activity because individuals are smuggling and selling it but if it were legal there would be no need for those extra methods to using marijuana.
ReplyDeleteMarijuana can be used for medicinal purposes, but those purposes are limited. There are only so many medical uses for marijuana. However, if marijuana was to be legalized by the government the medicinal uses for it will probably expand due to research. But because it would be legal, the people who don’t use marijuana for medicinal uses, would abuse it heavily. Marijuana would be rampant in the streets, and on the “black market”, but there would be nothing government officials could do about it because it’s legalized. Personally, I think drugs (in the negative sense) are a menace to society. Legalizing one that happens to have medical purposes would only make drug problems in America worse.
ReplyDeleteIf it was possible to make sure that no one outside of an illness could use marijuana for anything outside of medicine, then I would say legalize it. But because marijuana is used illegally in the U.S. and no one has created a way of apprehending those who supply it yet, then no. The use of marijuana leads straight to constant drug use. Once one has had a little dose of one drug, then they want more. And the drug use goes on an on. Legalizing marijuana would be like giving a free pass to all the marijuana addicts, saying they can abuse the drug freely. If marijuana is legalized by the government, then those who abuse it would run amuck. The people that are against the use of marijuana would protest against the government for allowing marijuana to be legal. The government would fall, because the people they are supporting would not support them, and marijuana would eventually be returned to illegal. The people abusing marijuana would be rounded up, and incarcerated, or put in mental facilities. Legalizing marijuana would harm the innocent people who have not experienced its effects, and harm those who have as well. I oppose legalizing marijuana, because not only will it put our citizens in danger, but it will make the economy suffer. In short, legalizing marijuana would be a huge mistake on the government’s part; one that I hope they never make.
This is a very controversial and highly discussed matter, whether or nor marijuana should be made legal. I have done a mock trial/ debate on this topic and I believe there are good and beneficial outcomes that come with legalizing this substance.
ReplyDeleteA few state such as California have agreed to legize this substance and so has Vancouver. I'm am not sure as to why they did so but they did.
My thoughts on this situation I believe the government should legalize marijuana under the same pretences the use to sell tobacco. If you look at certain studies as to the chemicals in the subtances cigarrets are more harmful to the body than those in marijuana. Also, if the government was to legalize it they would be able to regulate the use of it from minors. And if you were to just ask around you find that more young kids do it because it is "illegal" and it gives them the sense and feeling of rebllion and it would jus make them look cool. Legizing it would take the cool and wow factor out of the suntance and it will be just another drug sold in stores.
I'm pretty sure the government havent look at it this way if they do so it would be a whole nother market opening up and they could make lots of money off of selling the product themselves. This could even lessen the crime in areas of having to secret deal for or buy from someone, less death by hands of people.
All I all I think the government should legalize marijuana , there could be some suprising outcomes from this very wise decision.
Honestly I don’t know if I could say that I want marijuana to be legal or illegal. I honestly don’t care, it doesn’t matter to me if it is or it isn’t. I don’t smoke it so the whole topic is irrelevant to me. I understand that they can be used for medical purposes, but I haven’t encountered a situation in my life where I would need to use marijuana to help me. There are many people rallying to get this drug legalized. I’m a little on the fence with this topic, even though it really doesn’t matter to me. I believe that if people want to smoke let them smoke. As long as they aren’t harming others in the process it’s fine with me. I don’t have a problem with them smoking at all. I also believe if they legalize this drug they may also have to legalize many other drugs. The users of other drugs may feel as though if this drug is legal why other drugs can’t be legal, such as crack cocaine, meth, heroin, and many others. This could make it possible for other people to rally to get other drugs legalized. This could lead to many other problems and fighting amongst the drug community. This could possibly go farther than drugs, it may lead to people that normally do bad things thinking that if they get enough people to rally for said things they could become legal. This is happening now with the NAMBLA group, they are a group of men who are being oppressed because they have relationships with underage boys. I personally think that is wrong and they should all go to prison for a very long time. If marijuana is legalized that is kind of like saying, “hey America just go ahead and do whatever silliness you please”. That’s basically what I think of the whole situation. So in my opinion I would definitely have to say that I do not think the United States of America should legalize marijuana. I think it would be a bad idea and could potentially lead to far greater problems in America.
ReplyDeleteShould marijuana be legalized? This is a good topic; in my opinion I think marijuana should be legalized now. I feel this way because when it is illegal people “claim” they use it to relieve stress. By legalizing it (marijuana) people are able to release pent up stress and they are able to mellow out. I know some people may not feel the same way as I do; but I think people well be happy and they will be their true selves if marijuana is legalized. I also think the workforce will take a big hit during the beginning of marijuana be legalized, but if the government legalizes and put a sale on the marijuana; then maybe everything will balance out. I also think the economy may take a big hit during this time because some people who are unable to control themselves; will turn out and become pot heads. Legalizing marijuana can help blacks in the 21st century be more of themselves. It may be loud and rude, but maybe by embracing certain things we will be able to see how artistic and creative a person can be. Hopefully it can open their eyes from just seeing the color of a persons skin; to seeing the true real person behind that skin. Why should a race be categorized as always using illegal drugs; if the government decides to legalize marijuana, then most races can express themselves openly and even more freely than before. The government may also see that by legalizing marijuana people are able to solve things peacefully than before; for example instead of starting wars or choosing to go to war, they can try to talk things out and get different opinions/options on certain situations. The government can look at the effects that marijuana has on people who use it for medical purposes, then they can based their decision from this information; instead of just looking at the negative side of things; every negative has a positive. In the end this is just my own opinion on how things should be done; if marijuana should be legalized I’ll probably won’t try it, but it can probably help others to get over probably and achieve their goals.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I do not think that marijuana should be legalized. However, the government took this act into consideration because they felt that the legalization of the drug could promote the economy, when it is necessary. Any drug not prescribed, and even some that are prescribed should not be used or legal;in that case, marijuana should not be legal. These substances are all drugs, and all drugs create a negative affect the human body. Some may ease pain but cause brain cells to die. Drugs do more damage to your body than dealing with the illness or disease yourself. People that smoke marijuana say that it makes them feel good, someone I know even said it makes him "smarter." When taking a drug too many times a person can become addicted, and can possibly not be able to concentrate without it.
ReplyDeleteThe government obviously does not care about the health of the people when I comes to making more money. Someone told me and believes that the reason that the state government did not make marijuana legal is because they did not find a legitimate way for making money off of the drug. Many people agree with that idea. If the government ever decided to make marijuana legal, I do think there would be a difference in the economy based on the social problems it will cause; there would be an imapct socially. This will allow people, especially little kids to believe that drugs are okay to take. There will probably be an increase in deaths, and hospitalization. It is no wonder why the government came close to making marijuana legal in New York, hospitalize more people equals more money and more deaths equal more money and a lower population to spread more resources. Maybe that is the plan; though it is amoral, influence and encourage people to slowly kill themselves off while creating a better economic system and allowing for the natural resources to spread easily. The government is all about money. Will they make more money by having marijuana illegal, causing more people to go to jail or get fines or making it legal, encouraging it having people buy it with no problem and die because of it. Legalizing marijuana is amoral, though economically beneficial and having it be illegal show that the government cares about the people and not just about the wealth.
In order to answer this question and not just give an answer right away, I think that research is important. “Under the Controlled Substances Act of 1970, marijuana is classified as a Schedule I drug on the basis that it has a high potential for abuse.” This simply means that Marijuana is illegal because it is seen as addictive and there is a possibility it will take over your life and cause you to lose yourself to it. However what I don’t understand is why alcohol is legal because from what I have learned it is also addictive and it can take over your life and possibly kill you. Cigarettes are also addictive because if they weren’t people wouldn’t make patches and gum for when you try to quit it. If it wasn’t addictive, you could just simply stop smoking. However we all know that it’s never that simple. Another reason Marijuana is said to be illegal is because it doesn’t have any nationally accepted medical benefits. The first piece of federal legislation to formally regulate marijuana was the Narcotics Act of 1914, which regulated heroin, cocaine, and marijuana. The only trouble is that cocaine and marijuana are not technically narcotics; the word "narcotic," when used in English, has historically referred to opium derivatives such as heroin and morphine. But the association stuck, and there is a vast gulf in the American consciousness between "normal" recreational drugs, such as alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine, and "abnormal" recreational drugs, such as heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine. Marijuana is generally associated with the latter category, which is why it can be convincingly portrayed as a "gateway drug." From everything I have read the reason Marijuana is not legal is because of its association and bad representation. It is associated with abnormal drugs even though it is a plant and has been proven to help people that are sick. Now with all the information I have learned I can definitely say that I believe Marijuana should be legal. Id Alcohol and cigarettes can be illegal why not marijuana. In my eyes there is no real reason to band marijuana.
ReplyDeleteThere are many reasons why marijuana should and should not be legal. But I say that should be legal. Even though if they make it legal people will abuse it I still say it should be legal. People do it any ways even though it is illegal now so it would not make much of a difference. And some people need it for prescription purposes so it would make sense to make it legal for that reason. So why should people that need it suffer because of people that abuse it. And the people that abuse it still do it anyway. It just doesn’t make sense. Most kids already do it and there still young. The way I see it is legal or illegal people will always smoke marijuana. So the might as well make it legal. They say that marijuana does less damage to your body then alcohol. So why is alcohol legal and marijuana is illegal? It’s proven that does less damage but its illegal. If your going to make marijuana illegal then I feel they both alcohol and marijuana should be illegal. Either makes both legal and both illegal. The one that does more damage to human body is legal and the one that does less damage is not, it really does not make any sense. Another reason it should be legal is that some places in already have it legal. In California it is legal and that’s in the United States. So why does most other places in the U.S have it illegal? It might have well been legal everywhere in the United States. People in the music industry promote it all the time, so they encourage people to do it. Which a lot of people do eventually do it. In conclusion, there are many different arguments you can bring up on this topic but I agree with making it legal. Yea people will abuse it if it is made legal, but people abuse right now and its not even legal. There are some people that really need and they are not allowed to have it in there the place they are in. my decision is that it should be legal.
ReplyDeleteThere is a huge debate about whether marijuana should be legalized or not. Marijuana comes from the hemp plant Cannabis sativa. Most people smoke the parts of the Cannabis plant like the flower, stem and seed. The active ingredient that is in Marijuana is THC or delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol. THC is quickly absorbed inside of the body. THC can cause short term medical affects to the body upon using marijuana. Some of these short term effects are: rapid heart rate, increased blood pressure increased rate of breathing red eyes, dry mouth increased appetite, and slowed reaction time. There are also other effects to the body which are paranoia, random thinking, short-term memory loss, anxiety, and depression. Using marijuana can also increase the risk for lung cancer.
ReplyDeleteI believe that marijuana should not be legalized. Considering the effects this drug has on people’s body, I think that it is highly dangerous for anyone to be using this drug. Lung cancer is one of the long term effects of using this drug. Lung cancer is not a very good thing to have. Lung cancer is very dangerous. We breathe through our lungs and having cancer in your lungs may cause breathing problems. Breathing problems will eventually lead to death because we need to breathe to survive. People may also think that it is okay to smoke marijuana if it is legalized. Since there is no restriction, people may think that there is nothing wrong with using this drug. For example, if there was no law for driving and texting, I think many people will be driving and texting. Even though the people know that it is dangerous to do this, they will still do it because they know they can get away with it. This is the same with marijuana. Marijuana should also be illegal because it will eventually influence young children to smoke marijuana as well. Generation after generation children follow in the foot steps of people who are older than they are. Marijuana being illegal is a good thing because it will keep the rates of people using marijuana low and prevent it from rising.
